| | Join us for our 2023 Annual Meeting on May 3rd at 7pm at the Piedmont Center for the Arts!
This is our most important meeting of the year where LWVP Members vote to elect the new Board of Directors, approve the 2023-2024 budget, and affirm our local Leagues' positions and programs. It is imperative that we have a quorum in order to conduct business, so your attendance is important! Drinks and desserts will be provided. The business portion of the meeting will start at approximately 7:15pm.

| Rebuilding Water Resilience from the Bottom Up
April 20, 2023 @ 5pm PT | | The LWV California Water Interest Group is holding a special webinar on “Rebuilding Water Resilience from the Bottom Up” on Thursday, April 20 at 5 p.m. This is a look at how water infrastructure is being impacted by climate change and how water agencies struggling to ensure water quality and availability.

| | | DC Emancipation Day Panel
April 16, 2023 @ 3:30pm PT | April 16th is a celebration of President Lincoln’s D.C. Compensated Emancipation Act, which freed approximately 2,989 African Americans in 1862 during the Civil War. More than 150 years later, residents in D.C. are still not afforded the same rights as their fellow citizens in other states. During this Emancipation Day celebration, we will lift up the struggle of DC Statehood as a human rights and racial justice issue and will bring DC leaders leading this fight for a panel discussion.

| | | EBMUD Water Wednesday - Drought to Deluge
April 27, 2023 @ 6pm PT | | After nearly three years of drought, the East Bay has received historic levels of snowfall and rainfall. EBMUD experts will provide a water supply update, discuss the effect of an unprecedented snowpack, and share how we are preparing and managing for weather extremes.

| | | Transitioning to Renewable Energy | |
Stanford professor, Mark Jacobson, spoke with the League on April 5, 2023 about transitioning California and the World to 100% Clean, Renewable Energy and Storage for Everything. His talk included reasons to transition to renewables, greenwash technologies, examples of current technology, and US and World statistics on renewables.

| | | State Sen. Skinner and Asm. Wicks speak about housing. | As part of its annual legislative interview process, the League of Women Voters of Piedmont together with other local Leagues, participated in interviews of California State Senator Nancy Skinner and State Assemblymember Buffy Wicks. Legislative interviews are an opportunity for legislators to share their priorities with local Leagues and develop an understanding of League positions and priorities.
This article highlights the fourth topic of those interviews covering the following questions.
"AB 2295 identified 7000 properties, all infill, for education workforce housing. How can districts better understand and take advantage of opportunities? Are there any additional funding carrots? Could you explain HHAP’s current status and its relationship to the housing element? What is the impact of market-rate development on small business?"

| | | | The League of Women Voters of Piedmont is proud to be sponsoring its fourth annual essay contest open to all high school juniors and seniors who are either 1) currently enrolled in Piedmont High School or Millennium High School or 2) residents of Piedmont, California.
This year's 250-500 word essays must be submitted by May 7, 2023. There is a $500 prize awarded to the first place entry.
