A Message from our new President, Lisa Gardner | I am honored to step into the role of President of the League of Women Voters of Piedmont. Together with our dedicated board and members, we will continue advancing the League’s mission to empower voters and defend democracy. This year, our priorities include strengthening voter services, expanding community engagement, and inviting more voices into our work. I encourage each of you to consider how you might contribute—whether by volunteering, sharing ideas, or joining us at events like our new “Lunch with the League.” With your energy and commitment, I know we can make a meaningful impact here in Piedmont and beyond.

LWV convenes June Annual Meeting | Many members attended our Annual Meeting at the Piedmont Center for the Arts on June 25, 2025, enjoying refreshments and connecting. PHS student Aliya Vora helped with meeting logistics. Secretary Kathleen Quenneville provided a leadership report, and highlighted the inspiring LWV California June convention, at which we had three delegates. Treasurer Jennifer Nixon reported that LWV Piedmont ended the year financially strong. Members approved the board's proposed 2025-26 budget. Inspiring PHS graduating senior Mary Schickedanz, the recipient of the League’s 2025 Civics In Action Medal, addressed the attendees. Two new board members were elected at the meeting: Lisa Gardner (President) and Margaret Reiss (Director at Large). We were unsuccessful in garnering members to serve in a number of open board positions, including voter services, program, membership, and webmaster. In order for LWVP to advance our goals of empowering Piedmont voters and protecting democracy, we will be asking members to help the board in delivering these services. Please contact us to volunteer! Email Lisa Gardner, at president@lwvpiedmont.org to find out more.
We wish to thank retiring board members Anita Stapen and Jennifer Trainor for their important service to LWVP. While Linda McClain remains on the board, she is stepping back from her long and valuable role as VP of Membership. We also appreciate the continuing contributions of City Council Observer Winifred Walters and Local League Coach Bonnie Hamlin. And we cannot end the Annual Meeting summary without thanking Lorrel Plimier for the indispensable knowledge transfer and insight she has provided!

Get engaged with Unite and Rise 8.5! | What is Unite and Rise 8.5?
The LWV US deems our country to be in a constitutional crisis, due to the Trump administration’s repeated attacks on our democratic systems and Congress’s failure to intervene. The LWV believes that 8.5 million individuals could bring about change by nonviolent action. That’s about 3.5% of eligible US voters.
To help protect our democracy, you can join forces with the LWV, tell your representatives to support the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, turn up the heat on elected officials at town halls, demand due process for ICE detainees, and participate in your local league’s efforts in your community. For further information, go to www.lwv.org/uniteandrise.
If you care about democracy as much as we do, we hope you'll consider joining our team! We are an all volunteer organization with "jobs" that range from once in a while tasks to full year positions.
Join our group of fun, passionate volunteers and help make a difference in your community!
