During these conventions the students attending the convention debated political issues, wrote letters to government officials, and conducted voter registration drives. Josie also worked with Piedmont Community Service Crew, and conducted a program in the Dominican Republic, that focused on community service through sports. This year the League of Women Voters celebrates one hundred years since its founding, in 1920.  The League was established during the time that states were deciding whether to endorse the amendment of the United States Constitution to recognize women’s right to vote.
The LWVP Civics in Action Award is presented each year as part of the Senior Awards Night celebration.  The high school civics teachers typically recognize one senior from Piedmont High School or Millennium High School who has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to civic engagement and outreach.

Josie was awarded a $500 prize.
