Letter sent to City Council

The Board of Directors would like to advise the LWVP membership that on January 30, we sent a forward-looking letter to the City Council expressing concerns about the City's process of requesting taxes and the overall burden on taxpayers. The Board unanimously approved this letter at a special meeting on January 29. A copy of the letter is below. As the letter says, the LWVP is taking no position on Measure F. We seek a volunteer to monitor meetings of the City Council and Budget Advisory & Financial Planning Committee, as we follow future planning around taxes and bonds.

Full House at LWVP's Annual Holiday Luncheon

We had a full house for the LWVP Annual Holiday Luncheon, held earlier today at the Piedmont Center for the Arts. Guest Speaker, former Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, spoke about mentoring young women, some of her successes as Mayor of Oakland, and her plans for the future. Her talk was followed by an engaging question and answer session where Ms. Schaaf answered questions ranging from school funding to current crime rates.

LWV Piedmont Delegates attend the LWV California State Convention

Members from the League of Women Voters of Piedmont attended the LWV California State Convention this past weekend in San Francisco. The biennial convention drew over 200 delegates, staff, and League members from Leagues across the state. In attendance as delegates from Piedmont were Jennifer Trainor, Lois Corrin, Lorrel Plimier, and Kathleen Quenneville.

We support the Alameda County Board of Supervisors proposal to establish a Voters
Commission on Elections. We previously noted that any elections commission that will play an oversight, accountability, or transparency role over the ROV cannot be internal to the ROV, and should not be designed by the ROV. We are encouraged by the introduction of this proposal because it would create an oversight commission that is not designed and internal to the Registrar of Voters.

Climate Action in Piedmont

On February 1, 2021 the Piedmont City Council unanimously approved a second reading of proposed energy reach codes. The reach codes are local building energy codes that reach beyond statewide requirements for energy use in building design and construction. Piedmont is one of the first cities nationwide to adopt reach codes for energy efficiency and appliance electrification in new and existing residential buildings.

We previously noted that any elections commission that will play an oversight, accountability, or transparency role over the ROV cannot be internal to the ROV, and should not be designed by the ROV. We are encouraged by the introduction of this proposal because it would create an oversight commission that is not designed and internal to the Registrar of Voters.

LWV Piedmont Delegates attend the LWV California State Convention

Members from the League of Women Voters of Piedmont attended the LWV California State Convention this past weekend in San Francisco. The biennial convention drew over 200 delegates, staff, and League members from Leagues across the state. In attendance as delegates from Piedmont were Jennifer Trainor, Lois Corrin, Lorrel Plimier, and Kathleen Quenneville.

LWVP Annual Meeting at the Piedmont Center for the Arts

LWVP held its first in person Annual Meeting since 2019 with drinks and dessert at the Piedmont Center for the Arts. Members voted in the new board and approved the budget and recommended program for the coming year.

LWVP members suggested topics for next year's local focus including housing policy, climate advocacy, accessibility of Piedmont sidewalks, updated contract for Oakland library use, disaster preparedness, and diversity. LWVP members approved the board's recommendations in May.

LWV Piedmont recommended to LWVUS that they continue with the Campaign for Making Democracy Work including a focus on Statehood for DC and filibuster reform in the US Senate. We also recommended that LWVUS focus education and advocacy efforts to combat climate change.

At our program planning meeting in February of 2021, LWVP came to the consensus to recommend LWV of California focus on water resources, education, and criminal justice reform. We also decided to focus locally on housing equity and oversight of the implementation of Measure UU (the community pool bond).

LWVP Supports Piedmont's Readmont with Book Donation

The League of Women Voters of Piedmont contributed to the funding of books donated by Piedmont's Title IX Celebration Committee for this year's Readmont. The League at the national level, worked for passage of Title IX and has since focused on thwarting congressional attempts to dilute it.
